Announcement of the IEEE AP/ED/MTT North Italy Chapter Thesis Awards

The IEEE AP/ED/MTT North Italy Chapter is pleased to announce the list of recipients of the 2019 IEEE AP/ED/MTT North Italy Chapter Thesis Awards

The Chapter would like to congratulate the Award Winners for their excellent work.

The Best Thesis Awards are intended to support students involved in the areas of interest of the Antennas and Propagation, Electron Devices, and Microwave Theory and Techniques Societies, and their selection is based on the relevance of the thesis within the associated fields of interest, and on its creativity, innovative content, and quality. To be eligible for the 2019 Edition of the award, each applicant had to be (i) a Master’s or PhD student having discussed his/her thesis on one of the topic of interest of the Antennas and Propagation, Electron Devices, and Microwave Theory and Techniques Societies at an accredited institution of higher learning in Italy between 01/11/2019 and 31/10/2020, (ii) if competing for a doctoral award, to be a student member/member of the IEEE AP-S or IEEE ED-S or IEEE MTT-S at the time of application, and (iii) to have the endorsement of his advisor, who must be a university/college faculty member who is also a member of the IEEE AP/ED/MTT North Italy Chapter.

Moreover, the Chapter would like to thank the Award Evaluation Committee, composed by Prof. Vincenzo GALDI (Università del Sannio), Prof. Marco Donald MIGLIORE (Università di Cassino e del Lazio Meridionale), and Prof. Luciano TARRICONE (Università del Salento), members of the IEEE MTT-S/AP-S Central-Southern Italy, for their invaluable contribution, and all the applicants for their participation and commitment.

Representation of Electromagnetic Responses in Time Domain Using State Space System Identification Method

Abstract

This seminar presents a control system methodology based on system identification to derive state matrices and system dynamics for the extrapolation of simulated time-domain electromagnetic (EM) responses using both input and output data. The method is applied to model transient responses for a dielectric resonator and a wideband slot antenna computed by the finite integration method (CST Microwave Studio) using non-Gaussian excitation pulses typically employed in digital signals. Using state space system identification formulation, a compact representation of the output time-domain signal is derived, including the early-time transient responses, and its numerical implementation depicts no instability (oscillations) in late-time responses plotted well beyond the steady state. Furthermore, all the system poles are found to lie within the unit circle in the complex plane. Excellent model corroboration is achieved with independently computed frequency domain data or measured results. Application of the state space method to improve efficiency in FDTD simulations will also be presented with an example on a printed antenna and a bandpass filter

Short Bio

Krishna Naishadham received M.S. from Syracuse University, and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Mississippi. His Ph.D. thesis formulated rigorous asymptotic methods for transient electromagnetic (EM) scattering from arbitrarily curved objects. He spent a year as Post-Doc with Prof. Leo Felsen in New York working on high-frequency spectral numerical approaches extending his thesis. Dr. Naishadham served on the faculty of Electrical Engineering as a tenured Full Professor for 15 years at the University of Kentucky and Wright State University, in the US. He taught several courses and short courses in EM, microwave and antenna design. From 2002-2008, he worked as a Senior Research Scientist at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, where he contributed novel computational EM methods and state space spectral estimation methods for radar scattering. In 2008, he joined Georgia Institute of Technology, where he is a Research Professor with ongoing research on low-power wireless chemical and biosensors, 5G antenna design and novel multifunctional antenna arrays. His research is internationally recognized, with several publications, invited talks and collaborations in these areas. He was an Associate Editor for the ACES Journal and currently serves as an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Microwave Science and Technology. He currently serves on a high-profile Review Panel at the National Institutes of Health, USA, on wireless sensors for health applications.

Benchmarking computational electromagnetics with exact analytical solutions of canonical electromagnetic scattering problems

Abstract

Solutions of canonical electromagnetic scattering problems may be used to benchmark computational electromagnetics methods. While the list of known exact analytical solutions is limited, this list extends significantly beyond classical solutions for the scattering from metallic bodies such as the sphere, the 2D metallic wedge, and the infinite circular cylinder. In fact, recently developed exact solutions exist for geometries involving cavities, sharp edges, apertures, and propagation across different media. Unfortunately, many articles discussing computational electromagnetics solutions frequently propose validations or benchmarks with geometries as simple as a sphere and then jump into comparisons with very complex objects such as a numerical model of an airplane. In such cases, validations with simpler, but yet challenging benchmarks should provide additional evidence of their accuracy. In many cases, comparisons with exact solutions for benchmarking purposes are quite straightforward to implement.

 

Short Bio

Danilo Erricolo received the Laurea degree of Doctor (summa cum laude) in electronics engineering from the Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy, in 1993, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), Chicago, IL, USA, in 1998. In 2009, he was an Air Force Faculty Fellow with the Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, OH, USA. He is currently a Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, UIC, where he is also the Director of the Andrew Electromagnetics Laboratory and an Adjunct Professor of bioengineering. He developed a 2-D simulator for the propagation of the electromagnetic field in urban environments that could consider base-stations located below or above the average rooftop height, thanks to introduction of uniform theory of diffraction double wedge diffraction coefficients. He contributed to the development of many exact solutions of canonical scattering problems, which advance the understanding of scattering from analytically treatable geometries and provide benchmarks for computational electromagnetics software. As part of these studies, he wrote software for the computation of Mathieu functions that has applications beyond the field of electrical engineering. He also developed an acceleration method for series expansions containing Mathieu, prolate, and oblate spheroidal functions, which impacts all applications of these functions, such as in porous media flow. He contributed to the validation of the incremental theory of diffraction by developing comparisons with exact canonical solutions and experiments. He also applied his research to medical applications, specifically in the field of magnetic resonance imaging. He co-authored the first papers on RF tomography for applications to subsurface sensing and is currently engaged with its extension to other environments. He has authored or co-authored more than 240 publications in refereed journals and international conferences. His current research interests include electromagnetic propagation and scattering, highfrequency techniques, wireless communications, electromagnetic compatibility, the computation of special functions, and magnetic resonance imaging. Dr. Erricolo is a member of Eta Kappa Nu and was an elected full member of the U.S. National Committee (USNC) of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) Commissions B, C, and E. He served as the Chair from 2009 to 2011, the Vice Chair from 2006 to 2008, and the Secretary of the USNC-URSI Commission E on Electromagnetic Environment and Interference from 2004 to 2005. From 2009 to 2014, he served as the Chair of the USNC-URSI E. K. Smith Student Paper Competition. He also served as the Vice-Chair of the Local Organizing Committee of the XXIX URSI General Assembly, held in Chicago, in 2008. He serves as a member at Large of USNC-URSI from 2012 to 2017, a committee of the U.S. National Academies. He was the General Chairman of the 2012 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and USNC-URSI National Radio Science Meeting, held in Chicago, in 2012. From 2011 to 2016, he was the Chair of the Chicago Joint Chapter of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) and the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society. Since 2005, he has been serving the IEEE AP-S Future Symposia Committee, and since 2006, he has been serving as a USNC-URSI Representative on the AP-S/USNC-URSI Joint Meetings Committee. He was an elected member of the Administrative Committee of the IEEE AP-S from 2012 to 2014 and served as the Chair of the Distinguished Lecturer Program of the IEEE AP-S from 2015 to 2016. He has served on more than 40 conference Technical Program Committees, chaired over 60 conference sessions, and organized more than 20 special sessions at international scientific conferences. He was an Associate Editor of the IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters from 2002 to 2014, the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ANTENNAS AND PROPAGATION from 2013 to 2016, and Radio Science from 2014 to 2016. In 2006, he was the Guest Editor of the “Special Issue on RF Effects on Digital Systems” of the Electromagnetics Journal, and in 2012, he was a Lead Guest Editor of the “Special Issue on Propagation Models and Inversion Approaches for Subsurface and Through Wall Imaging” of the International Journal of Antennas and Propagation. Since Aug. 2016 he is the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation.

Meta-Atoms for 3D Printing Metamaterials

Abstract

In this seminar, Prof. Vardaxoglou will introduce the concept and uses of MeTa-Atoms (MTAs) in electromagnetic and egineered metamaterials. MTAs are meso scale inclusions in a host material. These meta-atoms could be varied in constitution and geometry to augment a variety of artificial and novel magneto-dielectric properties. Various 3D-printed multi-layered metamaterials with different periodicities fo dielectric or metallic inclusions will be shown. The effect of the periodicity (space between adjacent elements) on the effective metamaterials properties is examined by placing the 3D-printed samples in a waveguide simulator or on a resonator measuring system. Some of these structures have already been applied in engineering applications such as antennas, microwave lenses and electronic devices.

Biography

Yiannis Vardaxoglou is the Head of the Wireless Communications Research Group (WiCR) researching wide- ranging topics applicable to cutting-edge wireless communications technology. His research focuses primarily on metamaterial structures for electronic devices, antennas in microwave and mm-wave engineering. He has authored 300 publications and several book chapters and a pioneering book on Frequency Selective Surfaces. WiCR collaborates with many internationally leading universities and companies and is home to the internationally renowned Loughborough Antennas & Propagation Conference (LAPC).

Abstract
From frequency selective surfaces (FSS) to electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) ground planes, from impedance boundaries to Huygens metasurfaces, novel electromagnetic surfaces have been emerging in both microwaves and optics. Many intriguing phenomena occur on these surfaces, and novel devices and applications have been proposed accordingly, which have created an exciting paradigm in electromagnetics, so called “surface electromagnetics”. This seminar will review the development of electromagnetic surfaces, as well as the state-of-the art concepts and designs. Detailed presentations will be provided on their unique electromagnetic features. Furthermore, a wealth of antenna examples will be presented to illustrate promising applications of the surface electromagnetics in antenna engineering.

Biography
Prof. Fan Yang received the B.S. and M.S. degrees from Tsinghua University, and the Ph.D. degree from University of California at Los Angeles. Currently, he is a Professor at Tsinghua University and serves as the Director of the Microwave and Antenna Institute. Dr. Yang’s research interests include antennas, surface electromagnetics, computational electromagnetics, and applied electromagnetic systems. He has published four books, six book chapters, and over 300 journal articles and conference papers. Dr. Yang serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Trans. Antennas Propagation, Associate Editor-in-Chief for Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society (ACES) Journal, and TPC chair of 2014 IEEE AP-S International Symposium.
